Weight Loss Surgeries + 5.5%, Health Club Revenues +8.7% in 2017

Dec. 11, 2018

We’ve been updating some parts of our study: “The U.S. Weight Loss & Diet Control Market”. A few new data points have come in.

Health Clubs…

U.S. health clubs and gyms had revenues of $30 billion in 2017, according to data from IHRSA (Intl. Health Racquet & Sports Clubs Association). This represents an increase of 8.7% over 2016. 2018 data is not yet available but we’ll have an estimate or actual figure in our January study coming up. This increase is in line with historical growth rates and gains posted since 2014.

Weight Loss Surgeries…

The ASMBS (American Society for Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery) reports that there were 216,000 bariatric surgeries performed in 2016, and this rose 5.5% to 228,000 in 2017. The value of the market is estimated at $5.70 billion in 2017 (based on an avg. cost of $25,000 per surgery). Sleeve procedures accounted for 59.5% pf the total. Again no 2018 data yet but we’re working on it.

Diet Products Multi-level Sales…Herbalife…

Based on the first three quarters of 2018, Marketdata estimates that Herbalife, one of the MLM marketers, will have U.S. sales of weight management products of $582 million. This is up about 10.6% from 2017 levels of $526 million. This figure is still not as high as the 2016 level of $596 million, but close. Weight management items accounted for about 64% of Herbalife’s total net sales in 2017 (worth $2.84 billion worldwide), and U.S. sales represented about 18-19% of the total sales of $4.42 billion.

Herbalife is one of the biggest players in the U.S. weight loss market, ranked #3 in diet products sales behind Weight Watchers and NutriSystem. It ranks ahead of Jenny Craig’s $400 million. Multi-level companies are often little covered or researched when it comes to the weight loss market, because most are privately owned and it’s hard to get financial data. However, MLM remains a major distribution channel for weight loss products, mainly meal replacement shakes and nutrition bars, as well as fat burners and other OTC appetite suppressants (pills).
