New Weight Loss Statistics, New Reports

Dec. 5, 2022

Some new statistics related to the weight loss market have come out, from two sources. The first is related to bariatric surgeries. The ASMBS (American Society for Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery) has released an estimate of the number of surgeries for the total U.S. in 2020. There were 198,651 procedures performed, which is down 22.4% from 256,000 in 2019. That’s no surprise, since the pandemic in 2020 shut down many hospitals’ elective surgeries and consumers cancelled. There were 122,056 sleeve procedures, 41,280 RYGB, and 22,022 Revisions.

Another source, County Business Patterns, released 2020 data about “diet and reducing centers” (commercial weight loss centers, NAICS code 812191). Data confirmed what we thought, that receipts took a dive in 2020 as retail weight loss centers closed or curtailed operations, and struggled to maintain their business. Estimated receipts fell by 11.2% nationwide, from $1.78 billion in 2018 before the pandemic to $1.58 billion in 2020. Average annual receipts per center fell from $597,000 in2017 to $542,768 (-9.1%). The number of retail diet centers/services in 2020 was 2,911 establishments, employing 21,693 persons.
